About the Course
This course covers a test method for determination of total sulfur in petroleum and petroleum products that are single-phase and either liquid at ambient conditions, liquefiable with moderate heat, or soluble in hydrocarbon solvents. These materials can include diesel fuel, jet fuel, kerosine, other distillate oil, naphtha, residual oil, lubricating base oil, hydraulic oil, crude oil, unleaded gasoline, gasohol, biodiesel, and similar petroleum products.
The course takes approximately 1 hour to complete and includes instructional video content, interactive knowledge checks, and a self-grading quiz. Downloadable resources include a pdf of the standard.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Define interferences, including spectral interference and matrix effects.
- Identify apparatus and reagents used for determination of total sulfur, especially energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence analyzer.
- Recognize sample cell preparation procedures.
- Recall calibration procedures, including calculations.
- Recall procedural steps for determination of total sulfur, including those for analysis of unknown samples.
- Identify reporting requirements as outlined in ASTM D4294.
- Recognize quality control procedures.
