This course provides an overview of alternative aviation fuels, their regulatory basis, and the standards for their qualification and use. More than two decades ago, supply security concerns prompted a new focus within the aviation community on exploring alternatives to petroleum-derived jet fuels. This effort emphasized developing synthetic fuels with chemical and physical properties nearly identical to conventional jet fuels, ensuring compatibility with existing infrastructure and fleets. Key references include "Certification of Drop-In Alternative Fuels for Aviation" by Mark Rumizen and ASTM standards D1655, D4054, and D7566, which guide the specifications and evaluation of new aviation turbine fuels.
This course can be completed in approximately one hour and does not replace the ASTM standards referenced.
