About the Course

This test method covers the atmospheric distillation of petroleum products and liquid fuels using a laboratory batch distillation unit to determine quantitatively the boiling range characteristics of such products as light and middle distillates, automotive spark-ignition engine fuels with or without oxy- genates, aviation gasolines, aviation turbine fuels, diesel fuels, biodiesel blends up to 30 % volume, marine fuels, special petroleum spirits, naphthas, white spirits, kerosines, and Grades 1 and 2 burner fuels.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of atmospheric distillation and its application in performing petroleum product analysis.
  • Describe the scope of atmospheric distillation and its applicability to various petroleum products, including test parameters for different product types.
  • Demonstrate gain in-depth knowledge of the various parts of distillation equipment and demonstrate its proper use and control to achieve accurate results.
  • Understand the importance of correct sample handling and preparation and the adverse effects that improper techniques can have on test results.

Who Should Attend

This course is intended for all laboratory staff , chemists and laboratory technicians involved in analytical work including distillation analysis of various petroleum products.

Throughout his career, he has led analytical operations, supervised lab personnel, and developed specialized training programs for graduates and seasoned professionals.

Dr. Arab has played a critical role in establishing laboratories for prominent companies such as Saudi Aramco Shell Refinery, Saudi Chevron Phillips, and Saudi Polymer Company. He has developed ASTM-based training programs to enhance technical skills and hands-on proficiency for lab personnel and initiated inter-laboratory testing programs involving local labs and ASTM's Proficiency Testing Program in Polymers.

Since 2020, Dr. Arab has served as an ASTM-approved trainer, conducting specialized training on ASTM methods for petroleum products. He holds a B.Sc. in Chemistry, M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry, and Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Allahabad, India. Dr. Arab currently serves as a Technical Consultant and Trainer in QA/QC Laboratory training.

Mohammed A. Musa has over 40 years of experience in refinery, petrochemicals, and plastics laboratories, and has held managerial roles overseeing staff development and training, as well as quality benchmarking through Inter-laboratory Correlation Programs (PTP). An ASTM Approved Instructor since 2018, he delivers ASTM courses on test methods and other technical subjects, both in-person and online.

He has served as QA/QC Laboratory Manager at Saudi Chevron Phillips Co. and Saudi Aramco Shell Refinery Co., overseeing quality for a range of petrochemical and petroleum products. Mohamed holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Industrial Chemistry, is an ASTM member, and earned an ISO/IEC 17025-2017 Certificate of Achievement from IAS.

He has authored and co-authored multiple technical papers in hydrocarbon processing, catalyst activity, and selective catalysis, including a publication in the Arabian Journal of Science and Technology.
