About the Course

This test method covers the determination of total sulfur in petroleum and petroleum products that are single-phase and either liquid at ambient conditions, liquefiable with moderate heat, or soluble in hydrocarbon solvents. These materials can include diesel fuel, jet fuel, kerosine, other distillate oil, naphtha, residual oil, lubricating base oil, hydraulic oil, crude oil, unleaded gasoline, gasoline-ethanol blends, biodiesel, and similar petroleum products.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand safety protocols, significance, and scope of ASTM D4294 testing procedures.
  • Identify and apply key terminology used in ASTM D4294 for sulfur content determination.
  • Recognize and operate testing apparatus, reagents, and materials required for accurate sulfur measurement.
  • Properly sample and handle testing specimens to ensure accurate and reliable results.
  • Prepare and calibrate testing apparatus following ASTM standards for optimal performance.
  • Evaluate precision, bias, and result integrity through effective quality control practices.
  • Summarize key concepts and address any remaining questions in a QA session to reinforce understanding.
  • Who Should Attend

    This course is intended for:

    • Lab technicians
    • Laboratory shift leaders
    • Laboratory managers
    • Supervisors
    • Analysts
    • Chemists
    • Specialists
    Course Outline

This course offers an in-depth exploration of ASTM D4294, a key standard for determining sulfur content in petroleum products. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the safety measures, significance, and scope of the testing procedure. The course will introduce essential terminology, provide an overview of the required apparatus, reagents, and materials, and guide learners through the correct handling of samples and testing specimens. Key topics include the preparation and calibration of the apparatus, calculation and reporting of results, and ensuring result integrity through precision and bias evaluation. A review and QA session will conclude the course to solidify learning and address any questions. Ideal for laboratory technicians and professionals involved in quality control and petroleum analysis.
