This test method specifies a procedure for the determination of the kinematic viscosity, ν, of liquid petroleum products, both transparent and opaque, by measuring the time for a volume of liquid to flow under gravity through a calibrated glass capillary viscometer. The dynamic viscosity, η, can be obtained by multiplying the kinematic viscosity, ν, by the density, ρ, of the liquid.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
This course is intended for:
This course provides a comprehensive overview of kinematic viscosity testing, focusing on the method's safety, significance, and practical applications. Participants will learn about various testing instruments such as viscometers and automatic viscometers, viscometer holders, temperature control baths, and optional ultrasonic baths. The course covers essential topics including sample handling, material and reagent requirements, and the certified reference materials used in testing. Detailed procedures for conducting kinematic viscosity tests and calculations, precision, bias, and repeatability/reproducibility will be discussed. Ideal for professionals seeking to understand the technical aspects of viscosity measurement in various industries.

He has developed ASTM-based training programs to enhance technical skills and hands-on proficiency for lab personnel and initiated inter-laboratory testing programs involving local labs and ASTM's Proficiency Testing Program in Polymers.
Since 2020, Dr. Arab has served as an ASTM-approved trainer, conducting specialized training on ASTM methods for petroleum products. He holds a B.Sc. in Chemistry, M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry, and Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Allahabad, India. Dr. Arab currently serves as a Technical Consultant and Trainer in QA/QC Laboratory training.
Mohammed A. Musa has over 40 years of experience in refinery, petrochemicals, and plastics laboratories, and has held managerial roles overseeing staff development and training, as well as quality benchmarking through Inter-laboratory Correlation Programs (PTP). An ASTM Approved Instructor since 2018, he delivers ASTM courses on test methods and other technical subjects, both in-person and online.
He has served as QA/QC Laboratory Manager at Saudi Chevron Phillips Co. and Saudi Aramco Shell Refinery Co., overseeing quality for a range of petrochemical and petroleum products. Mohamed holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Industrial Chemistry, is an ASTM member, and earned an ISO/IEC 17025-2017 Certificate of Achievement from IAS.
He has authored and co-authored multiple technical papers in hydrocarbon processing, catalyst activity, and selective catalysis, including a publication in the Arabian Journal of Science and Technology.
Learning will be assessed through a series of question and answer sessions
