About the Course

This test method specifies a procedure for the determination of the kinematic viscosity, ν, of liquid petroleum products, both transparent and opaque, by measuring the time for a volume of liquid to flow under gravity through a calibrated glass capillary viscometer. The dynamic viscosity, η, can be obtained by multiplying the kinematic viscosity, ν, by the density, ρ, of the liquid.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of the safety precautions, significance, and scope of ASTM D445.
  • Accurately define and apply the terminology specific to ASTM D445.
  • Recognize and correctly identify the apparatus, reagents, and materials necessary for performing ASTM D445.
  • Explain and execute correct procedures for sampling and preparing test specimens according to ASTM D445 standards.
  • Demonstrate the correct procedure for calibrating a glass capillary viscometer.
  • Perform calculations for analysis and accurately report results according to ASTM D445 guidelines.
  • Discuss and implement methods to maintain result integrity through precision, bias control, and quality assurance.

Who Should Attend

This course is intended for:

  • Lab technicians
  • Chemists
  • Analysts
  • Specialists
  • Laboratory managers
Course Outline

This course provides a comprehensive overview of kinematic viscosity testing, focusing on the method's safety, significance, and practical applications. Participants will learn about various testing instruments such as viscometers and automatic viscometers, viscometer holders, temperature control baths, and optional ultrasonic baths. The course covers essential topics including sample handling, material and reagent requirements, and the certified reference materials used in testing. Detailed procedures for conducting kinematic viscosity tests and calculations, precision, bias, and repeatability/reproducibility will be discussed. Ideal for professionals seeking to understand the technical aspects of viscosity measurement in various industries.
