Objectives

This e-learning course is designed as an introduction to the nondestructive examination (NDE) methods outlined in the ASME Section V code and teaches you:

  • to understand the basic structure of ASME Section V;
  • to efficiently navigate the NDE requirements of ASME Section V; and
  • how to apply common NDE methods, including
    • radiographic examination (RT),
    • liquid penetrant examination (PT),
    • magnetic particle examination (MT), and
    • thickness measurements by manual ultrasonic pulse-echo contact method.

Learning Outcomes

The goal of this eLearning course is to introduce the learner to the basics of common NDE methods and at the same time gain a practical understanding of one of the most used NDE codes, ASME Section V, Nondestructive Examination. Learn how to apply the fundamentals of NDE by referencing and interpreting code rules to better identify code non-conformances and reporting requirements. Learning outcomes include practical knowledge of:

  • fundamentals and practice of using common NDE methods;
  • standard NDE terminology (ASTM E1316 Standard Terminology for NDE) to better recognize nonstandard (slang) terms and practices;
  • standard NDE practices by applying Code rules for:
    • NDE equipment and materials Code requirements;
    • written procedure requirements, Code essential and nonessential variables;
    • standard techniques within NDE methods;
    • equipment calibration Code requirements;
    • records and documentation Code requirements
  • navigating ASME Section V rules and beginning to technically interpret and not literally interpret Code rules; and
  • NDE responsibilities of the Owner/User, Code User, and Examiner
