About the Course

Designing and manufacturing products is complicated. One tool that's often overlooked as a way to make things easier and design better, lower-cost components is metals science and engineering.

Understanding metallurgy is critical for designing low-cost components. However, many people haven't had much metallurgy training and don't have a good understanding of metals science and how to apply it to component design.

In this course you will learn about:

  • Metallurgical factors that influence metal properties
  • Metallurgical reasons of how alloying, heat treatment, and cold working affect metal strength.

Learning Outcomes

The topics that will be covered are:

  • The relationship between a metal's properties and its composition, microscopic structure, and the manufacturing processes used to fabricate the metal
  • How a metal's microscopic structures and composition influence metal strength.
  • Metallurgical changes that result from alloying, cold working, and heat treating, and the effects of these changes on metal strength.
  • How metals engineering fits in with component design, manufacturing, sourcing, and solving reliability problems.
  • Component design considerations for selecting metals.
  • Identifying component design requirements and alloy selection criteria.

Michael has a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University and is a professional engineer licensed in Illinois. He has published the book Materials Enable Designs: The Materials Engineering Perspective to Product Design and Manufacturing.

About ASTM and Sponsoring Committee

ASTM Committee A01 on Steel, Stainless Steel and Related Alloys was formed in 1898 and is ASTM's first technical committee. A01 meets twice a year, at the May and November ASTM Committee Weeks, with approximately 200 members attending over the four days of technical meetings. The Committee, with a membership of over 1300 industry professionals and experts, has jurisdiction of over 500 standards, published in January in six volumes of the Annual Book of ASTM Standards; Volumes 01.01, 01.02, 01.03, 01.04, 01.05 and 01.06. A01 has 22 technical subcommittees that maintain jurisdiction over these standards.
