Objectives

This training program is designed to help you:

  • learn the basics of steel inclusions using ASTM standards;
  • apply ASTM standard terminology to steel inclusions;
  • understand how inclusion content is controlled;
  • become more competent at accepting/rejecting steel products; and
  • better apply ASTM steel standards by understanding the practices, test methods, and specifications that govern them.

Learning Outcomes

The following learning outcomes will be achieved upon completing this eLearning course;

  • Recognize the origin of inclusions as part of the steelmaking process as well as recognize standard practices to minimize inclusions by desulfurization
  • Understand the anisotropic behavior of steel and its relationship to the rolling direction, differing mechanical properties, and elongated inclusions as defined in ASTM steel standards
  • Recognize the importance of controlling inclusion through steelmaking practices, as specified in ASTM steel standards
  • Identify laminations as initiating from larger areas of inclusions as part of the steelmaking process and how best to improve the steel's through-thickness ductility to avoid lamellar tearing, as guided by ASTM steel standards
  • Categorize inclusion shape control as another steelmaking method used to manage the morphology of inclusions to improve through-thickness ductility, as defined and specified by ASTM steel standards
  • Determine inclusion content and morphology of steel by using ASTM standard test methods

About This Course

This e-learning course is comprised of:

  • 13 Connecting-the-Standards© examples demonstrating how to use 12 ASTM steel standards;
  • 6 photos and diagrams explaining steelmaking and ASTM standard requirements
  • 6 Knowledge Checks, including interactive skill tests; and
  • Final assessment quiz to measure your knowledge level and earn IACET CEUs

Who Should Attend

This eLearning course is designed for all people that work with ASTM steel standards or simply want to learn more about steels.
