    Learning Outcomes

    This e-learning course is designed to provide the learner with an introduction to steelmaking by using ASTM steel standards. By the end of this course, the learner will understand the basics of steelmaking by practicing with 11 selected ASTM and API steel standards, and learning to:

    • categorize ferrous and nonferrous materials, steels and steel product forms
    • recognize the steelmaking processes used in ASTM steel standards, including: the basic oxygen furnace (BOF), electric arc furnace (EAF), ladle metallurgy furnace
    • differentiate between ingot and continuous strand cast steelmaking methods, as specified in ASTM steel standards
    • identify the steelmaking practices of rimmed and killed steels, as specified in ASTM steel standards
    • recognize the importance of steel inclusions; their anisotropic effects; "clean" versus "dirty" steels; and controlling, measuring, rating inclusions by using ASTM and API steel standards
    • apply the ASTM standard meaning of: heat of steel and lot of steel; and how each interacts within a material test report
