    About the Course

    The content covers an introduction to oxygen and oxygen fire risk management, and introduces important concepts such as material compatibility, ignition and contaminant hazards as well as good practices to minimize the risk. The course has periodic quizzes to review section content.


    Learning Outcomes

    By the end of this course the student will be able to:

    • Examine how oxygen increases the flammability and ignitability of material.
    • Discover how to apply a simple risk management mode
    • Recognize good practices that safely defend against the hazards.


    Audience

    Individuals involved in the use, specification, procurement, operation, maintenance, instrumentation, safety, management or incident investigation of systems, components and fires involving liquid or gaseous oxygen or oxygen-enriched gas mixtures. This might include engineers, technicians, medical and health professionals, home healthcare personnel, safety and forensic experts, fire investigators, emergency responders, facility supervisors and plant managers, operators, maintenance personnel, distributors and refilling station personnel and individual users of oxygen.

    About the Instructors

    Elliot Forsyth is Director of Education and Technical Training for WHA International, Inc. As an Oxygen Safety & Forensic Engineer he has worked with oxygen systems throughout his career. He began at NASA White Sands Test Facility performing oxygen system design, analysis, and tests on materials and components for oxygen compatibility. He currently serves as Chairman of the ASTM G04 Committee on Flammability & Sensitivity of Materials in Oxygen-Enriched Atmospheres. Mr. Forsyth has over 20 years of experience consulting for companies across nearly all industries that use oxygen. His areas of expertise include engineering design of and materials selection for oxygen components and systems, analysis of oxygen hazards and oxy-fuel fires and failures, as well as oxygen systems operations and maintenance strategies. As WHA's Director of Education he has developed and instructed training courses on these topics for clients industry-wide.


    About ASTM and Sponsoring Committee

    ASTM Committee G04 on Compatibility and Sensitivity of Materials in Oxygen Enriched Atmospheres was formed in 1975. G04 meets twice a year, usually in April and September, with approximately 35 members attending two to three days of technical meetings capped by a presentation on relevant topics concerning the oxygen industry. Committee G04 also periodically sponsors symposia.
