Symposia / General InformationG02 Wear and Erosion
Event Name: D02 December 2019 Meeting
Pre-registration requested to attend this meeting.
ABOUT THE EVENT
The Workshop on Measuring the Friction Component of Oil will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2019. This workshop is sponsored by ASTM Committee G02 on Wear and Erosion and will be held at the Marriott New Orleans in New Orleans, LA, in conjunction with the December standards development meetings of the committee. Objective and Scope
The objective of the workshop is to provide guidance to users interested in reducing system friction on the role of oil or grease in friction reduction efforts. The overall subject for this event pertains to measuring the friction component of oil that is not associated with its viscosity (oiliness). Some questions we hope to answer are:
Topics may include but are not limited to:
- Do different lubricant molecules produce different friction effects rubbing on each other and against surfaces?
- What is the role of internal friction?
- How does one measure the internal friction of oils?
- Which ASTM testing standard for determining the friction coefficient of an oil or grease is the proper one to use?
- Does oiliness exist?
- Use of the 4-ball test for coefficient of friction
- Use of HFRR test for coefficient of friction
- Friction of oil versus grease
- Effect of additives on oiliness
- How to reduce oil friction
- How wear interferes with friction measurement
