Symposia / General Information

E60 Sustainability
Event Name: October 2017 Committee Week
Pre-registration requested to attend this meeting.

The Symposium on Balancing Resiliency, Safety, and Sustainability will be held Friday, October 13, 2017. Sponsored by ASTM Committee E60 on Sustainability, the symposium will be held at the Sheraton New Orleans in New Orleans, LA, in conjunction with the October standards development meetings of the committee.

Ultimately, the most-sustainable structures are those that are functional the longest. Buildings designed to withstand man-made or natural disasters will be more durable, send less waste to the landfills, and will be able to operate sooner (if not continually) after the event occurs. This concept—increasing durability, reducing waste, and safeguarding occupants—is fundamental to sustainable design. The symposium provides a forum for contributing to the fundamental understanding of contributions of materials and systems to the resiliency and safety of the built environment and its relationship to sustainability.

The symposium is intended to address topics related to resiliency, safety, and sustainability and the built environment including the following:

  • Hurricane, earthquake, flood/moisture, tornado, and fire resistance
  • Material and system contributions to resiliency
  • Design considerations related to resiliency, safety, and sustainability
  • Design challenges related to resiliency, safety, and sustainability
  • Building in the sustainability era
  • Life-cycle considerations
  • Public policy considerations related to building for resiliency

The language of the symposium will be English.

A technical program (presentation times, paper titles, and presenters’ names) will be posted on the ASTM website by August 2017.
