Symposia / General Information

C01 Cement
Event Name: June 2012 Committee Week
Pre-registration requested to attend this meeting.

A Symposium on Geopolymer Binder Systems will be held June 26-27, 2012. Sponsored by ASTM Committee C01 on Cement and C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates, the symposium will be held at the Sheraton San Diego in San Diego, CA in conjunction with the June standards development meetings of Committees.

When performance specifications for hydraulic cement (C1157 and C1600) were written, non-portland binders were uncommon and the specifications were not widely used. With increasing awareness of the damaging effects of CO2 emissions has come increasing pressure on the industry to develop more sustainable binders for concrete. New binders such as geopolymers and related alkali-activated aluminosilicates are being increasingly researched, are being marketed as specialty products, and are being explored for use in structural concrete. This symposium is intended to provide an opportunity for ASTM to consider such binders and whether the existing cement standards provide, on the one hand, an effective framework for further exploration of new sustainable binders and, on the other hand, reliable protection for users of these materials.

Papers will be presented on the following topics:

  • Manufacturing of geopolymers and related alkali-activated aluminosilicate binders
Alkali activation of fly ash and other waste materials
Assessment of materials for use in geopolymers

  • Performance of geopolymers and related binders
Standards for geopolymers and related binders

In addition, a panel will consider the question of standards for this material system.

The symposium is scheduled for June 26-27, 2012, beginning at 5 pm and ending at 7:45 pm each evening.

The language of the symposium will be English.
