    About the Event

    The Workshop on Autonomous Shipping, Vessel Automation and Maritime Cyber Security will be held Wednesday, December 5, 2018. Sponsored by ASTM Committee F25 on Ships and Marine Technology and will be held at the Washington Hilton in Washington, DC, in conjunction with the December 2018 standards development meetings of the committee.

    Objective and Scope
    This workshop will provide a forum for the exchange of ideas related to the operation of autonomous vessels in the maritime sector, as well as automation and cyber security in maritime domain. The objective for this workshop will be to identify potential new opportunities for standards and related products applicable to advancements in automation, autonomous shipping, and maritime-specific cyber security issues.

    Topics will include, but are not limited to:

    Autonomous shipping – Technological developments on the national and international level

    • Vessel remote control techniques
    • Semi-autonomous vessels

    Autonomous vessels – Safety and continuity of operations
    • Failure modes
    • Casualty prevention/recovery
    • Performance standards/guidelines for operators

    Autonomous shipping operations – Legal and regulatory issues

    • Legal definitions/terminology for autonomous shipping
    • IMO developments-scope of effort for SOLAS/COLREGS modifications

    • National and state laws
    • Personnel requirements (STCW and other qualification standards)

    Cyber Risk Management – National and international policy developments

    Cyber Risk Management – Issues specific to the maritime sector

    • Testing of maritime security systems
    • Integration of cybersecurity with safety management/ISM

    • Novel vessel concepts (LNG, fuel cell, battery propulsion)

    Online registration is now open and closes November 28, 2018.

    The fees to attend this symposium are listed below and include entrance to the Wednesday evening reception immediately following the workshop.

    All Attendees – All attendees, including presenters and ASTM members, must register for this event. If you do not register online by the closing date, then you must register at the ASTM registration desk before attending the workshop. All attendees must check in at the ASTM registration desk to pick up their name badge prior to entering the workshop.

    Students – A student’s fee is waived, provided he/she is a full-time student and is not employed full time. After registering online, the student must check in at the ASTM Registration Desk on site and present his/her student ID.

    Continuing Education Units

    Workshop attendees interested in receiving 0.7 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) must complete the CEU application form in the back of the program booklet and submit it to an ASTM staff member on site. You must be registered and have attended the entire workshop in order to receive the CEU’s. A certificate will be sent to the attendee approximately 4 to 6 weeks after the workshop.

    Hotel Information

    All meetings will be held at the Washington Hilton, 1919 Connecticut Ave., NW, Washington, DC, 20009.

    Hotel Reservations: Staying at our contracted hotel is important to ASTM, to the hotel where we are holding this meeting, and ultimately to you as an ASTM member. When you reserve a guest room at another hotel and an ASTM contracted room goes unsold, ASTM is liable and must pay a non-performance penalty fee to the hotel. Please support ASTM by reserving your sleeping room at our official hotel. Reservations may be made via the hotel's online reservation system at Washington Hilton. One night's room and tax deposit is required to confirm a reservation.

    The discounted rate will be honored until the ASTM block is full, but no later than November 12th, 2018. ASTM rates are $187 plus tax. You may be charged a higher rate if reservations are received after the cut-off date, or when the block is full. The hotel requires a credit card to guarantee your reservation, once submitted a confirmation number will be provided electronically.

    The Washington Hilton has a limited number of rooms at the government per diem rate. Reservations may be made via our online reservation system at Washington Hilton Government Reservations. You must present your ID at the front desk upon check-in.

    IMPORTANT! ASTM Rates are non-commissionable. If you book your reservation through a travel agent, they must ask for a non-commissioned ASTM Group Rate. ASTM cannot adjust your higher rate if commissions were paid to a travel agency.

    INTERNET: The Washington Hilton offers a complimentary basic wireless connection in the guest rooms with the ASTM group rate.

    CANCELLATION/CHANGE POLICY: At the Washington Hilton, notice of cancellation must be received 72 hours prior to day of arrival in order to avoid a charge.Failure to do so will incure a penalty equal to the cost of one night's room and tax.

    ASTM MEMBERS WORK AREA: ASTM will provide computers with internet connections. This area will also be wireless for your laptop computer. You may visit the ASTM website, apply or renew your membership, order publications or check your email. The complimentary wireless service is limited to the members' work area and the meeting rooms.

    Dress and Weather

    Attendees have the option to determine their dress at ASTM meetings. Business casual attire is acceptable at this meeting and appropriate for Washington DC. The average temperatures in December range from a high of 48 degrees Fahrenheit to a low of 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
