F08 Sports Equipment, Playing Surfaces, and Facilities


    About the Event

    The Sixth International Symposium on Safety in Ice Hockey, sponsored by ASTM Committee F08 on Sports Equipment and Facilities and its Subcommittee on Medical Aspects and Biomechanics, in cooperation with the Hockey Equipment Certification Council (HECC) and USA Hockey. The Symposium will be held May 13, 2019 in Denver, CO, in conjunction with the ASTM standards development meetings of Committee F08.

    This symposium is the sixth in a series, the first being held in 1987 in Montreal, the second in 1992 in Pittsburgh, the third in 1997 in St. Louis, the fourth in 2002 in Pittsburgh, and the fifth in 2008 in Denver. The objective of the symposium is to review the current state of the art and science of prevention of ice hockey injuries.

    Papers topics include but are not limited to:

    • Studies on specific injuries in ice hockey and ways to decrease the risk for these injuries
    • Studies on rink safety and problems related to the operation of rinks
    • Research in concussions (Minimal Traumatic Brian Injuries or MTBI)
    • Studies on new protective equipment
    • Studies on old protective equipment
    • Studies on coaching techniques to decrease the risk for injuries
    • Studies on playing rule changes to decrease the risk for injuries
    • Research on awareness programs to help decrease the risk for injuries, especially catastrophic injuries, for players, parents, coaches, referees, and administrators

    the fields of sports science, sports medicine, athletic training, biomechanics, risk factor management, epidemiology, national governing bodies, sports psychology, injury surveillance, equipment standards, physical conditioning, behavioral factors, playing facilities, officiating, and playing rules.

    Registration Information

    Online registration is now open and closes May 8, 2019. The fees to attend this symposium are listed below.

    All Attendees – All Attendees, including presenters and ASTM members, are urged to register online for this event so that space requirements can be accommodated. If you do not register online by the closing date, then you must register upon arrival at the symposium. All attendees must check in at the ASTM registration desk upon arrival at symposium.

    Students – A student's fee is waived, provided that he/she is a full-time student and is not employed full time. After registering online, the student must check in at the ASTM Registration Desk on site and present his/her student ID. The waived fee includes admission to the technical sessions only.

    Hotel Information

    All meetings will be held at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, 1550 Court Place, Denver, CO 80202.

    Hotel Reservations: Staying at our contracted hotel is important to ASTM, to the destination where we are holding this meeting, and ultimately to you as an ASTM member. When you book a hotel outside of the block, and a contracted room goes unsold, we must pay penalty fees to the hotel. Please support ASTM by reserving your sleeping room at our official hotel. Reservations may be made via our online reservation system at Sheraton Denver Downtown Reservations.

    Select your dates and proceed as instructed. Reservations may also be made by telephoning the hotel at 1-888-627-8405 (you must mention ASTM in order to receive the group rate). If you need assistance with your hotel reservation, please call the hotel directly.

    The discounted rate will be honored until the ASTM block is full, but no later than April 12th, 2019. ASTM rates are $199 plus tax. You may be charged a higher rate if reservations are received after the cut-off date, or when the block is full. The hotel requires a credit card to guarantee your reservation, once submitted a confirmation number will be provided electronically.

    The Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel has a limited number of rooms at the government per diem rate of $163. Reservations may be made via our online reservation system at Sheraton Government Reservations. You must present your ID at the front desk upon check-in.

    IMPORTANT! ASTM Rates are non-commissionable. If you book your reservation through a travel agent, they must ask for a non-commissioned ASTM Group Rate. ASTM cannot adjust your higher rate if commissions were paid to a travel agency.

    CANCELLATION/CHANGE POLICY: At the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, notice of cancellation must be received before end of business day (5pm) prior to day of arrival in order to avoid a charge. Failure to do so will incur a penalty equal to the cost of one night's room and tax.

    INTERNET: High Speed Internet is available in guest rooms for a daily surcharge.

    ASTM MEMBERS WORK AREA: ASTM will provide computers with internet connections. This area will also be wireless for your laptop computer. You may visit the ASTM website, apply or renew your membership, order publications or check your email. The complimentary wireless service is limited to the members' work area and the meeting rooms.

    Dress and Weather

    Attendees have the option to determine their dress at ASTM meetings. Business casual attire is acceptable at this meeting and appropriate for Denver. The average temperatures in May range from a high of 72 degrees Fahrenheit to a low of 44 degrees Fahrenheit.
