In light of COVID-19 (coronavirus) and our priority for the health and welfare of our members and staff, ASTM International has decided that it is inadvisable and impractical to hold the committee meetings in Prague on April 27-May 1. The decision was based on several factors, including, but not limited to:
Staff managers will be contacting committee leaders to plan alternatives for conducting committee business. For any committees that collected money for events, ASTM will work to issue refunds as necessary. Attendees are responsible for cancelling their own hotel reservations.
Looking forward, we will rely on these and other relevant criteria and input points to assess the status of future scheduled ASTM meetings and events. The Workshop on the Use of Absorbable Polymers for Medical Devices will be held Tuesday, May 12, 2020. This workshop is sponsored by ASTM Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices and will be held at the Boston Marriott Copley Place in Boston, MA, in conjunction with the May standards development meetings of the Committee.Objective and Scope
First introduced 50 years ago in the form of synthetic absorbable sutures, absorbable medical devices are an increasingly important segment of the medical device market. Driven by numerous companies seeking to grow their market position through introduction of new absorbable products, the last decade has produced the greatest growth and variety in product development and market introductions. However, these devices, which by their very nature are not stable, present unique challenges in device development, manufacturing, and packaging.
This workshop is designed to describe current and upcoming applications and trends in the use of absorbable polymers in medical devices, as well as to provide a forum to discuss the special considerations required of this this material set. Ultimately, the workshop’s goal is to identify current issues (both technical and clinical) and identify related needs for new standards that both guide and address these absorbable-specific considerations. Consequently, researchers, regulators, and industry representatives are encouraged to submit abstracts describing their work towards designing, developing, and/or evaluating partially or entirely absorbable medical devices. Specific topics of interest and potential standards development activities include:
Workshop attendees interested in receiving 0.7 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) must complete the CEU application form in the back of the program booklet and submit it to an ASTM staff member on site. You must be registered and have attended the entire workshop in order to receive the CEU’s. A certificate will be sent to the attendee approximately 4 to 6 weeks after the workshop.

SYMPOSIA REFUND: A refund of the symposium fee will be honored only if requested at least 10 business days prior to the workshop.
