    About the Event

    The Symposium on Modularity and Tapers in Total Joint Replacement Devices will be held Monday November 10, 2014. Sponsored by ASTM Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the symposium will be held at the Sheraton New Orleans in New Orleans, LA, in conjunction with the November standards development meetings of Committee.

    The purpose of this Symposium is to provide a forum for consensus development and scientific exchange on the needs for characterization and standardized testing related to modularity and tapers used in total joint replacement devices. The main focus of this Symposium is to address unmet standardization needs and to help establish best testing practices in the following four areas:

    • Characterization of Fretting, Taper Corrosion & Associated Adverse Tissue Reactions
    • What Do Retrievals Tell Us in Total Joint Arthroplasty?
    • Contemporary & Evolving Test Methodologies
    • Design Parameters for Taper Connections in TJA

    The language of the symposium will be English.

    A technical program (presentation times, paper titles, and presenters' names) will be posted on the ASTM website by late September.

    Registration Information

    Online registration opens approximately 8 weeks before the symposium and closes November 5, 2014. The fees to attend this symposium are listed below. These fees include:

    -the Monday evening reception
    -the cost of the resulting Selected Technical Papers (STP that will be sent to all symposium attendees). The STP is a printed volume of peer-reviewed symposium papers.

    Students – A student's fee is waived, provided that he/she is a full-time student and is not employed full time. After registering online, the student must check in at the ASTM Registration Desk on site and present his/her student ID. The waived fee includes admission to the technical sessions only.

    All attendees, including presenters and ASTM members, are urged to register online for this event so that space requirements can be accommodated. If you do not register online by the closing date, then you must register upon arrival at the symposium. All attendees must check in at the ASTM registration desk upon arrival at symposium.

    Continuing Education Units

    Symposium attendees interested in receiving 0.7 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) should complete a CEU application form at the adjournment of the symposium, and then submit it to the ASTM staff member on site. A certificate will be sent to the attendee approximately 4 to 6 weeks after the symposium.

    This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and ASTM, International. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

    All faculty/presenters will need to disclose in accordance with ACCME Standard 6: Disclosures Relevant to Potential Commercial Bias:

    Standard 6.1 - An individual must disclose to learners any relevant financial relationship(s), to include the following information: The name of the individual; the name of the commercial interest(s); The nature of the relationship the person has with each commercial interest.

    Standard 6.2 - For an individual with no relevant financial relationship(s) the learner must be informed that no relevant financial relationship(s) exist.

    Standard 6.3 - The source of al support from commercial interests must be disclosed to learners. When commercial support is "in-kind" the nature of the support must be disclosed to learners.

    Standard 6.4 - 'Disclosure' must never include the use of a trade name or a product-group message.

    Standard 6.5 - A provider must disclose the above information to learners prior to the beginning of the educational activity.

    All meetings will be held at the Sheraton New Orleans, 500 Canal St., New Orleans, LA 70130. Reservations may be made via our reservation link Registration for Sheraton New Orleans Hotel.
