    About the Event

The Conference on Measurement of Trace Metals and Metalloids at Workplaces will be held Thursday and Friday, October 24 & 25, 2019. Sponsored by ASTM Committee D22 on Air Quality, the conference will be held at the Marriott Marquis in Houston, TX, in conjunction with the October standards development meetings of the committee.

The conference will address methods and techniques to address trace and ultra-trace sampling, sample preparation and analysis of metals and metalloids that are of concern in industrial hygiene. Occupational exposure limit values for metals and metalloids are decreasing, especially for carcinogenics and sensitizers. These very low limit values bring challenges to the measurement methods for numerous elements and their compounds, e.g., Ni, Co, Be, Mn and Cr(VI). All portions of the methods including sampling, sample dissolution and the analytical methods themselves must be optimized dramatically in order to attain lower method detection limits while maintaining high data quality. For instance, all used chemicals and sampling substrates have to be of highest possible purity, and for personal sampling, new high flow samplers for inhalable and respirable fractions have to be developed. Furthermore, solubility issues for metal compounds of varying solubility are of considerable interest. ICP-MS and other ultra-trace measurement techniques will become more widely used for many metals and metalloids. Some of the current standardized methods may no longer be adequate for ever-lower elemental occupational exposure limit values.

The language of the conference will be English.
