    About the Event

    The Ninth Symposium on Roofing Research and Standards Development will be held Sunday, December 8, 2019. Sponsored by ASTM Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing, the symposium will be held at the Marriott Marquis Houston in Houston, TX, in conjunction with the December standards development meetings of the committee.

    Objective
    The symposium provides a forum for contributing to the fundamental understanding of acceptable roof performance, with the primary emphasis being current research and development work. The symposium will center on the influence of both laboratory and field investigations in the development of standards for roofing and waterproofing materials and systems.

    The symposium is intended to address topics describing research and standards development for both low-sloped and steep roofing systems including the following:

    • Polymer-modified and conventional built-up bituminous roofing
    • Synthetic single-ply roofing systems
    • Self-adhesive membrane roofing
    • Liquid-applied membrane roofing
    • Spray polyurethane foam roofing systems
    • Metal roofing systems
    • Roof edge systems
    • Performance of shingles, tiles and other steep roof coverings
    • Wind and fire resistance
    • Moisture in concrete roofing systems
    • Air and moisture movement in roofing systems
    • Air barriers and their tie-in to the building air barrier system
    • Cool roofing, vegetative (green) roofing and solar
    • Thermal performance and energy efficient roofing
    • Technology of roof coatings
    • Hygrothermal simulations/modeling
    • Roof system durability and service life prediction
    • Roofing in an era of sustainability and resiliency
    • Roofing retrofit
    • Advances in waterproofing
    • Advances in adhesion technology for synthetic and bituminous roofing
    • Advances in low-sloped roofing and its components

    Registration Information

    Online registration is now open and closes December 4, 2019. The fees to attend this symposium are listed below.

    All Attendees – All attendees, including presenters and ASTM members, must register for this event. If you do not register online by the closing date, then you must register upon arrival at the symposium. All attendees must check in at the ASTM Registration Desk to pick up their name badge prior to entering the symposium.

    Students – A student’s fee is waived, provided he/she is a full-time student and is not employed full time. After registering online, the student must check in at the ASTM Registration Desk on site and present his/her student ID.

    Cancellation

    Continuing Education Units

    Symposium attendees interested in receiving 0.6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) should complete a CEU application form at the adjournment of the symposium, and then submit it to the ASTM staff member on site. A certificate will be sent to the attendee approximately 4 to 6 weeks after the symposium.

ASTM International is legally bound to fill the contracted guest room block and an inability to fill the block will result in severe financial penalties which could affect negotiations and increase costs for future meetings.     The discounted rate will be honored until the ASTM block is full, but no later than November 8th 2019. The ASTM rate is $199 plus tax. You may be charged a higher rate if reservations are received after the cut-off date, or when the block is full. The hotel requires a deposit of one night's room and tax or a major credit card to guarantee your reservation, once submitted a confirmation number will be provided electronically.

    IMPORTANT! ASTM Rates are non-commissionable. If you book your reservation through a travel agent, they must ask for a non-commissioned ASTM Group Rate. ASTM cannot adjust your higher rate if commissions were paid to a travel agency.

    INTERNET: The Marriott Marquis Houston offers a complimentary basic wireless connection in the guest rooms with the ASTM group rate.

    CANCELLATION/CHANGE POLICY: At The Marriott Marquis Houston, notice of cancellation must be received 72 hours prior to day of arrival, in order to avoid a charge.

    ASTM MEMBERS WORK AREA: ASTM will provide computers with internet connections. This area will also be wireless for your laptop computer. You may visit the ASTM website, apply or renew your membership, order publications or check your email. The complimentary wireless service is limited to the members' work area and the meeting rooms.

    HOUSTON METRORAIL: At a cost of $1.25, guests can sit back, relax and will be dropped off curbside at either The George Bush Intercontinental Airport or The William P. Hobby Airport. Pick-up from the airport to the Downtown Houston area occurs every 30 minutes from 6:00am-12:58am. Approximate travel time is anywhere from an hour to an hour and twenty minutes.     SHUTTLE SERVICES: Super Shuttle is a ride service that will take a hotel guest anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour between the hotel and the William P. Hobby airport. Cost is $38 for up to three passengers. For travel to the George Bush Intercontinental Airport, rides will take anywhere from an hour to an hour and twenty minutes, with a cost of $51 for up to three passengers.     TAXI: TAXI: From The William P. Hobby Airport, the cost of a taxi is estimated to be $30. From The George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), the cost of a taxi is estimated to be $52.

    RIDESHARING PROGRAM: Transportation Network Providers (TNP), also referred to as a “rideshare” company, provide prearranged transportation through an app, connecting passengers with drivers of vehicles for hire. Lyft and Uber are TNP companies operating in Houston,TX.

    PARKING: Valet parking is available with rates of $45 daily parking. Off-site parking is also available at an hourly rate of $8 or $30 daily. 10% off Self-Parking for ASTM registered hotel guests will be available. The self-parking garage is next to the hotel and does not offer in/out privileges.


    Dress and Weather

    Attendees have the option to determine their dress at ASTM meetings. Business casual attire is acceptable at this meeting and appropriate for Houston TX. The average temperatures in December range from a high of 65 degrees Fahrenheit to a low of 45 degrees Fahrenheit.
