    About the Event

The Workshop on FZG Gear Lubricant Tests and Gear Rating will be held Thursday, June 28, 2018. Sponsored by ASTM Committee D02 L11 on Tribiological Properties of Industrial Fluids and Lubricates, the workshop will be held at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge in Phoenix, AZ, in conjunction with the June standards development meetings of the committee.

Base oil type, oil viscosity and additive type and content have a strong influence on typical gear failure modes like scuffing, wear, micro-pitting and pitting. In general it is not possible to quantify the lubricant influence on the gear load carrying capacity simply from the knowledge of physical or chemical oil data. Therefore a number of adequate test methods based on the FZG back-to-back gear test rig were developed for evaluating the lubricant performance.

Within the workshop the FZG gear test rig and widely used FZG test methods for gear lubricants will be introduced. For each test method requirements regarding test preparation, test course, documentation and test evaluation will be presented and discussed in detail. Furthermore, examples of failed gears will demonstrate the applicable rating procedures. A physical rating of some example gears amongst the participants will be performed.

    Course outline:

    • Introduction of FZG back-to-back gear test rig (standard set-up and modifications)
    • Overview of FZG test methods (general requirements)
    • Basics of main gear failure modes
    • FZG test methods and gear rating:
      • FZG scuffing tests
      • FZG wear tests
      • FZG micro-pitting tests
      • FZG pitting tests

Why it is important to attend?

The results of FZG tests allow gear designers to select adequate gear lubricants for an optimized gear load carrying capacity. FZG tests are therefore included in many technical specifications in the worldwide gear industry for different industrial applications. In order to obtain reliable and comparable results the test operators have to take care about the requirements on test rig, test parts and the different test procedures. They also should know about critical influence parameters and should be able to perform the required visual rating in accordance to the test specifications. The workshop will help participants to create and to evaluate test results with high precision and of increased reliability.

      Who should attend?

      • Test rig operators and technicians who perform FZG gear lubricant tests
      • Lab personnel who perform or are involved in the rating of results from FZG tests
      • Lab managers who are responsible for the results from FZG tests
      • Chemists who are involved in gear lubricant developing work
      • Engineers and gear designers who have to deal with the results of FZG tests for their work
      • Engineers who are responsible for developing gear lubricant specifications
