Since 1986, the Johnson Conferences have served as forums for the discussion of asbestos issues. Held in the beautiful summers of northern Vermont, the Johnson Conference is being renamed the “Johnson/Rook Conference” in honor of Dr. Harry S. Rook, chair of the first eight Johnson Conferences.
To encourage forthright presentations and discussions of novel ideas and controversial issues, the Johnson/Rook Conferences have a tradition of no recordings, reports, or publications. As such, these conferences have generated lively exchanges of ideas that have shaped many of the asbestos monitoring methods and strategies used today. While the tradition of no recording will be maintained at this Johnson/Rook 2020 Conference, the publication of full papers will be encouraged for an issue of ASTM’s Selected Technical Papers (STP), an online and printed, peer-reviewed publication for the international scientific and engineering community, to be published after the meeting following peer-review of the manuscripts through the ASTM formal review process.Scope
Detection, reporting, risk assessment, and regulation of asbestos and other fibrous minerals is as relevant today as when the first Johnson Conference was held. Abstracts that deal with these topics on a regional, national, or international level are solicited for the 2020 Johnson/Rook Conference.
Presentation topics include, but are not limited to the following:
Posters are also invited to be presented at the 2020 Johnson/Rook Conference. Poster presenters are required to be at their posters for one day during the meeting for face-to-face discussions during morning and afternoon breaks as well as for one half-hour before the morning session begins and one half-hour after the afternoon session adjourns. If you would like to present a poster, please follow the abstract submittal instructions and follow up with an email to Symposia Operations at email@example.com stating that you have submitted your abstract for poster presentation only.Who Should Attend
Professionals and laypersons with established as well as developing interests in asbestos who want to be informed of the latest information on asbestos issues will find this conference to be especially rewarding. This includes environmental consultants, laboratory analysts and managers, industrial hygienists, building owners, epidemiologists, toxicologists, land use planners and regulators, and federal, state, and local government officials responsible for making and reviewing decisions based on the findings of these studies.
The language of the conference will be English.
To present at the conference, authors must submit a 250 to 300-word preliminary abstract using the online Abstract Submittal Form no later than December 27, 2019. Please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org to confirm that; (1) we received your abstract and (2) you are committed to submitting a full manuscript by the September 1, 2020 due date. Participants submitting abstracts and a commitment to submit a paper will be given 30-minute slots in the program. Abstracts without a commitment of full manuscript submission will be given 20-minute slots, depending on the total number of abstracts accepted. Only two presentation abstract submissions are allowed per individual.
The abstract must include a definition of the objective and approach of the work discussed, pointing out material that is new, and present sufficient details regarding results. The presentation and manuscript must not be of a commercial nature nor can it have been previously published. The conference Co-Chairs will notify you via email and postal mail no later than January 31, 2020 of your paper’s acceptability for presentation. Final abstracts will be solicited from presenters several months before the conference. The final abstracts will be distributed in an abstract booklet at the conference.
After the final selection of abstracts has been approved, the ASTM Editorial Office will send publishing authors’ instructions via email. Manuscripts to be peer reviewed for the STP are due online by September 1, 2020 at the ASTM Editorial Office. The corresponding author (the author who is the main contact with ASTM Headquarters) will receive a copy of his/her paper in portable document format (PDF). All published authors will have the opportunity to purchase reprints of their papers at a nominal cost. Please note that only those papers submitted by the manuscript due date and passing the peer-review process will be included in the STP.
