E06/D08 Symposium on Building Science and the Physics of Building Enclosure Performance

    Dates: Sunday October 21 2018

    Location: Washington Hilton Washington, DC

Sponsored by: E06 Performance of Buildings

Deadline for Abstract Submittal: Wednesday October 04 2017

    About the Event

Papers are invited for the Symposium on Building Science and the Physics of Building Enclosure and Whole Building Performance, October 21, 2018, at the Washington Hilton, Washington, D.C., USA. The symposium is cosponsored by ASTM International’s Committee on Performance of Buildings (E06) and Committee on Roofing and Waterproofing (D08), and will take place in conjunction with the October standards development meetings of Committee E06.

This one-day symposium will provide a forum for the exchange of ideas on current research regarding building science and the physics of building enclosure and whole building performance, with an emphasis on transitions between the horizontal and the vertical and the critical points of intersection; testing and assessment of heat, air, and moisture transfer; energy use, and the environment. The program will begin with an opening keynote and unfold as follows:

  • Building Science Fundamentals
    • Physics of Heat/Air/Moisture Transfer
    • Material Selection for Durability and Performance
    • Interface Detailing and Continuity of Environmental Control Layers
  • Assessment and Understanding of Whole Building Performance
    • Critical Review of Standard Guides, Practices, and the Codes
    • Energy Modeling Facts, Myths and Legends
    • Testing and Assessment of Building Enclosure and Whole Building Performance
  • Case Studies in New Construction and Adaptive Reuse (The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly)
    • New Construction: Promises Made/Promises Kept?
    • Adaptive Reuse: A Road Paved with Good Intentions
    • Conservation: A Living Testament to ‘Sustainable Design’
  • Plenary Session and Panel Discussion
    • Lessons Learned
    • The Road Ahead

In the spirit of collaboration between D08 and E06, papers co-authored by D08 and E06 members are encouraged but not required.

The language of the symposium will be English.

    Abstract Submittal

To participate in the symposium, authors must submit a 250-300 word preliminary abstract online using the Abstract Submittal Form no later than September 29, 2017. Scroll to the top of the page to “Go to Abstract Submittal Form”. To ensure your abstract was received into the ASTM database, please email symposia@astm.org and inform them of your submission.

The abstract must include a clear definition of the objective and approach of the work discussed, pointing out material that is new, and present sufficient details regarding results. The presentation and manuscript must not be of a commercial nature nor can it have been previously published. Because a limited number of abstracts will be accepted, be sure that the abstract is complete to allow for careful assessment of the paper's suitability for this symposium. Symposium Chairs Dan Lemieux and Jennifer Keegan will notify you via postal mail by November 24, 2017 of your paper’s acceptability for presentation at the symposium. If the preliminary abstract is accepted, the presenter/author will be requested to submit a final abstract several months before the symposium. The final abstracts will be distributed in a program booklet at the symposium.

    Publication

Symposium presenters are required to submit their papers to the Selected Technical Paper (STP), an online and printed, peer-reviewed publication for the international scientific and engineering community. After the final selection of abstracts has been approved, the ASTM Editorial Office will send authors’ instructions via email only. Manuscripts to be peer reviewed for the STP are due online no later than September 30, 2018 at the ASTM Editorial Office. The corresponding author (the author who is the main contact with ASTM Headquarters) will receive a copy of his/her paper in portable document format (PDF). All published authors will have the opportunity to purchase reprints of their papers at a nominal cost. Only those papers submitted by the manuscript due date will be included in the STP.

Please note that all submitted papers are subject to single blind peer review and will be submitted to the Library of Congress with an ISBN number and will be reviewed for inclusion in the "Thomson & Reuters Web of Science's Conference Proceedings Citation Index" (CPCI) and Google Scholar.
