C01 Centennial Dinner in December

ASTM Committee C01 on
Cement will celebrate its 100-year anniversary with a centennial dinner in Miami on Tues., Dec. 10, during the Committee Week meetings of C01 and Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates. A cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m. precedes dinner at 7:30.

The committee invites all individuals to the event, including members of the ASTM concrete committees: C01, C09, C07 on Lime, C12 on Mortars and Grouts for Unit Masonry, and C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units.
“There will be a gala dinner,” says centennial chairman Emery Farkas, who was chairman of the ASTM Board in 1992. “We have a commemorative coin which everyone will receive at the dinner. We’ll have speakers like Jim Thomas [ASTM president], and Chairman of the Board Dick Schulte, and the president of Portland Cement Association, Jay Gleason.”

After the creation of Committee A01 on Steel in 1898, ASTM founded Committee C01 on Cement in 1902. ASTM’s third and fourth committees, B02 on Nonferrous Metals and Alloys and D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials, and Applications, followed that same year.

Farkas, a retired executive of W. R. Grace and Company, Baltimore, Md., says, “It’s very exciting to celebrate the centennial,” adding that it will be a particularly rewarding event for those who attended C01 meetings for nearly half a century.
