Task Group on Martial Arts Mats Seeks Participation

ASTM Subcommittee F08.12 on Gymnastics and Wrestling Equipment is currently seeking all interested parties to participate in a task group activity on martial arts mats. The task group is planning on improving performance criteria and testing for martial arts mats.

Most martial arts activities involve either significant spinning and foot dexterity or throwing. However, according to Rolf Huber, president, Everplay International, Inc., “The types of surfaces currently being used are not providing the protection the athelete requires. The existing performance tests are ad hoc at best.”

Huber says that it is important that end users participate in the process in order to better tailor the performance requirements for martial arts mats. At the current time, he says, the subcommittee is testing mats for impact and covers for foot-to-surface interface properties.

Committee F08 meets Nov. 9-12 during the November Committee Week in Washington, D.C. For membership or meeting details, contact Jim Olshefsky, ASTM International (phone: 610/832-9714). //
