Art Material Quality and Safety Among New Activities in ASTM Artist Paints Subcommittee

ASTM Subcommittee D01.57 on Artist Paints and Related Materials has many new activities. The group, which operates in Committee D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials, and Applications, proposed a Colored Pencil Performance and Quality Standard for ballot at ASTM International this winter and is developing a Pastel Performance and Quality Standard. Also in progress are standards for blue-wool, xenon arc, and lightfastness tests for pastels. The subcommittee is considering a revision to ASTM D 4236, Standard Practice for Labeling Art Materials for Chronic Health Hazards, and is forming a new Task Group on Hazardous Art Material Waste in Institutions. Subcommittee chairman Mark Gottsegen encourages international participation in the group’s development of standards for artist paints used internationally. The subcommittee meets April 30 and May 1 in conjunction with the National Art Materials Trade Association at the Navy Pier in Chicago, Ill.
