E. GEORGE STERN AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
This Society Recognized Committee Award has been established by Committee E06 on Performance of Buildings in honor of E. George Stern. Mr. Stern has joined ASTM in 1940 and has been an active and esteemed member of ASTM Committee E06 since 1955. Mr. Stern is currently the Subcommittee Chair of E06.56 Performance of Railing Systems and Rails for Buildings, and is the past chair of E06.13 Structural Performance of Connections in Building Construction. He is also a member of the E06.90 Executive Committee. His tireless effort and contribution to Committee E06 in its search for excellence is the basis for establishing this award. This award has been established to recognize members who have made similar continuous and outstanding contributions to the work of Committee E06, standardization development, and the building community.
Any member of Committee E06 is eligible to receive this award provided that they have been a member for at least five years. The nominees will be judged upon their continuous and outstanding contributions to the work of Committee E06, standardization development and the building community. This will be evidenced by their leadership qualities, such as publications, presentations, activities promoting ASTM E06 standards, industry recognition or other activities that have greatly advanced the performance or preservation of buildings.
At the Spring Main Committee meeting(s) each year, the E06 Chair shall ask the membership to submit names and profiles of members who are worthy of this honor to the Awards Committee Chair. Nominations must be received by Awards Committee Chair in the form of a letter documenting the contributions of the candidate no later than May 15 of the calendar year. The Awards Committee will review, via telephone or email, the nominees' profile to verify compliance with the scope of this award. Should, in the opinion of the Awards Committee, no candidate be worthy of the award, no award shall be given during the calendar year.
Each year the Executive Committee will select one individual to receive this award. The Executive Committee will select one individual to receive this award. The Executive Committee Chair shall only vote when required by this process. The Awards Committee shall distribute a ballot by June 1 to the Executive Committee, excluding the Executive Committee Chair. The ballot shall contain a list of the nominees and their respective profiles. The ballot shall remain open for 15 days.
Approval of a recipient is designated by the most Executive Committee votes. In the event of a tie, another ballot shall be prepared, with only the finalist on it, and again distributed to the Executive Committee, excluding the Executive Committee Chair. This ballot shall remain open for 15 days. If a tie still exists, only then will the Executive Committee Chair vote to break the tie. The Committee Chair's designee shall notify the recipient before the Fall Main Committee meeting. The Main Committee shall be notified at the Fall Main Committee meeting when the recipient receives the award.
A wall plaque shall be created by Committee E06 and displayed at ASTM Headquarters. The name and year shall appear on the nameplate. The wording on the plaque shall read.

Committee E06 will solicit contributions to cover the cost of the wall plaque for ASTM Headquarters. The cost of the walnut plaque, nameplate and pin will be covered by ASTM's annual contribution for awards. In the event that this means is discontinued, or lacking in funds, the money shall be deducted from the General Fund of Committee E06.
