Analysis of Effects of Test Temperature on the Notch Strength of High-Strength Sheet Alloys

The notch properties of four high-strength sheet alloys are analyzed as a function of test temperature. For the particular heat treatments employed, three of the alloys (300 M, Vascojet 1000, and Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al) exhibit a sudden loss in notch strength with decreasing test temperature. The temperature of this transition, which reflects an inherent loss in ductility, is also found to depend upon the stress state—in particular, the stress biaxiality at the notch root as indicated by the ratio of thickness to root radius. The apparent dependence of transition temperature on the stress concentration factor appears to be a secondary effect. The fourth alloy, Ti-4Al-3Mo-1V, does not exhibit a transition at temperatures down to −320 F, even for high stress-concentration factors. Nevertheless, a loss in notch ductility for all test temperatures is observed with increasing biaxiality at the notch root for thickness to root radius ratios larger than about 10. A new quantity, the notch ductility ratio, appears to be an extremely useful parameter in the analysis of notch tensile strength data.
