D 515-60 T Tentative Methods of Test for Phosphate in Industrial Water

Source

(a) These methods cover the determination of dissolved phosphates in industrial water. The following four methods are included: (b) All of the methods are based on reactions that are specific for the orthophosphate ion. Preliminary treatment is included for removal of color and turbidity, and heating in the presence of strong acids in the gravimetric and volumetric methods is included to convert most polyphosphates to the ortho form. As described, the gravimetric and volumetric methods determine all dissolved phosphates that can be dissolved and converted to the ortho form by the prescribed treatment. Non-Referee Method B covers the determination of only orthophosphate, whereas Non-Referee Method C covers the determination of both ortho and total phosphate. Selection of the method to use for a specific water depends on its expected phosphate content.
