A brief review of the history of the development of the triaxial test for road work, up to current practice, is given, together with a discussion of the stress forms in road pavements and the applicability of triaxial methods thereto. The nature of the Mohr diagram as an interpretation is given, with mention of other methods of use and interpretation. The reasons for the formation of the Triaxial Institute are discussed, and research on the fundamental problem of forming test specimens properly to represent materials as laid in pavements is described.
