Phase Designations of Alloys Appearing in the Powder Diffraction Data File Sections 1 to 12

Source

This supplementary brochure lists the alloy phases of the X-Ray Powder Diffraction File of Sections 1 to 12 in accordance with the Method of Assigning Phase Designations in Metallic Systems (ASTM Designation: E 157–61 T) developed by ASTM Committee E-4 on Metallography. In order to facilitate the correlation of the list of alloy phases with the Index of the X-Ray Powder Diffraction File, the corresponding card number, name of the alloy, and three strongest lines are also listed. The alloy systems have been listed in alphabetical order and they include also alloys of the nonmetals where, in general, the nonmetal of small atomic radius may form interstitial solid solutions. Thus the hydrides, borides, carbides, nitrides, and oxides of the metals and alloys are included in this list. The new phase designation aims to eliminate the confusion which has been introduced in the literature by the indiscriminate assignment of Greek and Roman letters to various alloy phases. Such indiscriminate usage resulted frequently in the assignment of different letters to the same phase, or, conversely, to the assignment of one letter to different phases. To avoid this pitfall the ASTM scheme of phase designation is based on composition and crystal lattice.
