The urgent need of the Air Force for protection of engine parts at very high temperatures presented a definite challenge to the protective coating industry. Techniques and processes built up through years of porcelain enameling were very useful but did not go far enough to produce the results desired. New ideas were essential to meet this challenge. It was immediately recognized that modification of conventional equipment was at best a stop-gap procedure. Design and construction were started on radically different facilities matched solely to the processing of high-temperature ceramic coatings. It became apparent at once that extreme care was essential in the handling of these coatings in every step of the production operations. The very thin coatings, the critical nature of metal preparation, the intricate design of the parts to be coated, and the perfection of finish that is necessary to withstand the high operational temperatures made it vital that every piece be treated with individual attention and care.
