    Abstract

    “Glassed steel,” or glass fused to steel, is often used as a material of construction for process equipment because of its wide range of chemical resistance. In order to make available specific data on chemical resistance of glassed steel, a large number of test results are reported in tabular form. Included are data and information on hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and phosphoric acid at temperatures above 212 F. Specific instances where glassed steel is being used in severe services are cited. A novel design laboratory test unit for glassed steel, but adaptable to other coatings, is described for the first time. Other methods and equipment for laboratory and field tests are given. Reference is made to an acid-resistant glass with improved alkali resistance which has been thoroughly field tested and is now in production.
