Physical Constants of Hyrocarbons Boiling Below 350 F

Source

At the January, 1946 meeting of Technical Committee H, on Light Hydrocarbons, of A.S.T.M. Committee D-2 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants, it was decided that the work of the committee and certain other groups in A.S.T.M. would be facilitated if a standard set of physical constants of the low boiling hydrocarbons were available. Such a tabulation, it was agreed, should contain those constants found most useful in the natural gasoline, synthetic rubber, industrial aromatics, and gaseous fuels industries. The existence of tabulated data from American Petroleum Institute Research Project No. 44 was recognized, but these data are either not in the form required in these industries or, in some cases, certain of the desired constants are simply not included in the A.P.I. compilation. It was further acknowledged that the two major natural gasoline associations, the N.G.A.A. and the C.N.G.A., had issued tables but that they did not adequately cover the field that Technical Committee H embraces; namely, specifications, methods of test, and nomenclature for light hydrocarbons. With this background, the formation of a working group was authorized and formally organized shortly thereafter. It comprises representatives from Shell Development Co., Union Oil Co. of California, and California Research Corp. The definitely Western complexion of this group was dictated by ease of communication between members.
