Inspection of Welding Made by the Watertown Arsenal

Source

In the development of its welding practice, the Watertown Arsenal has utilized its X-ray equipment which had been installed for other purposes. This practice has been of great assistance in inspecting welds and particularly in developing the methods and shop technique for the varied work of ordnance construction. It has also been utilized in training welders, and on control of quality of output. The practice has been based on a small shop engaged for the most part on hand work by metallic arc, but equipped for and using other methods of welding. Machine welding by the metallic arc is used to a limited extent and a practice for flash welding is being developed. A considerable portion of the output consists of experimental designs. All divisions of the laboratory have been utilized in developing welding technique, and in interpreting inspection practice. Not-withstanding its limitation, X-ray inspection has become standard practice and is relied upon as the most potent single factor in maintaining high-quality workmanship.
