    In planning the program for this Symposium, it was considered advisable to devote some time to a discussion of the fundamentals of lubrication of worm gears. I shall try to outline our theory of what happens on the rubbing surfaces of gear teeth. This theory is substantiated in most respects by laboratory and field data; however, further work is under way to tie the various factors more tightly together. The discussion will deal only with surface galling, which is the broad term for wear, welding, and seizure. It will disregard spalling or pitting because tests show that such failures are caused by metal fatigue and are not affected by lubrication. The effectiveness of gear tooth lubrication depends upon a variety of basic factors, for instance: 1. Geometry of contact between teeth, 2. Speed of contact, 3. Pressure of contact, 4. Oil viscosity at contact temperature, and 5. Character of oil.
