Experiences with Structural Sandwich in Building Construction

Source

During the past 10 to 20 years many laminated panels have been used as wall elements in various types of building structures. In most cases, the panels support nothing but themselves. They offer varying resistance to wind loads, thermal transfer, sound transfer, fire, and weathering. Because of the variety of characteristics sought, plus the variety of exposure conditions to be met, no manufacturer has yet— to the author's knowledge—offered an all-purpose panel to the construction market. In the area covered in this paper (multistory buildings), sufficient difficulty has been encountered in the use of these panels to justify a review of some typical experiences in the hope that some of these common problems may be pinpointed and studied and a better solution developed. In the usual application of laminated panels in commercial or institutional buildings, the owner and architect are usually looking for long component life, minimal maintenance, design flexibility, thermal and fire resistance, and competitive price.
