Introduction

Prior to 1947, A.S.T.M. Committee E-7 had confined its activities to the field of radiography. In that year the committee decided to broaden its activities to cover the development and dissemination of knowledge in other non-destructive testing fields as well. One of the committee's first tasks was to broaden the general knowledge of the various aspects of ultrasonic testing for the Society and industry in general. This technique employs ultra high frequency sound waves, generally in the order of a fraction to several megacycles, primarily to detect internal or external flaws or foreign bodies in otherwise homogeneous masses. Applications in this category have ranged from detecting and locating gall stones in humans to determining the presence of internal cracks in steel through distances of 25 ft. or more. Another category rapidly becoming of widespread interest is dynamic testing at ultrasonic frequencies. Actual use of the principle of reflecting sound waves for flaw detection is certainly quite old. Laboratory work of high precision has been conducted for about a decade.
