    Comparison of the BfU and IAS Binding Adjustment Systems for Recreational Skiers

    The binding lateral toe release torques recommended by the Schweizerische Beratungsstelle für Unfallverhütung (BfU) and the Internationaler Arbeitskreis Sicherheit beim Skilauf e. V. (IAS) have been compared for 362 recreational skiers, randomly selected from a Norwegian ski slope. The lateral toe release torques recommended by BfU were generally higher than those recommended by IAS, and for all skiers, the mean difference between the BfU and IAS recommended values was 7%. This difference was much higher for women, children, and beginners for whom values between 13 and 52% were recorded. In contrast, BfU recommended release torques 8% below those of IAS for male expert skiers. The observed differences in the recommended binding release torques may indicate that, for some skiers, BfU and IAS have different opinions regarding the strength of the leg. Further studies are thus required to determine the injury threshold of the human leg while skiing.
