Identification and Mode of Formation and Re-Solution of Sigma Phase in Austenitic Chromium-Nickel Steels

Source

A comprehensive investigation of the etching characteristics of the several phases occurring in austenitic stainless steels, supplemented by X-ray diffraction and magnetic permeability studies, has suggested procedures by which the sigma, carbide, and ferrite phases can be differentiated, with certain exceptions, under the microscope. The mode of formation and re-solution of sigma was observed, and transient formation of ferrite was detected during re-solution of sigma at a temperature above its stable range.
