Legibility of carbon copies has long been considered a subjective property where psychological factors play a significant part in the selection of acceptable quality. Some investigators have tried to place legibility on a more objective basis. The use of the scanning microdensitometer to make a profile of an individual image and then interpret that profile in numerical terms offers the most satisfactory approach to achieving that goal. In this paper, a microdensitometer will be described, and the method that has been developed for using it in analyzing carbon copy image quality will be reported. A mathematical model for the microdensitometer trace is proposed that will permit the interpretation of the effect due to character dimension and the correlation of parameters that may be used in describing legibility. The model also suggests several techniques that may be used in measuring these parameters. Many of the variables affecting carbon copy quality include impressioning conditions, material differences, and form construction. Numerical data from the scanning microdensitometer technique will be used to illustrate the effect of some of these variables.
