    The basic rules for the compaction of cohesive soils by low-frequency vibration or resonant tamping are presented. The summarized results of tests on two types of cohesive soil are shown in the form of graphs and represent the basis for the conclusions. The basic rules are: (1) operate at or near resonant frequency of the soil oscillator mass; (2) supply a dynamic force approximately equal to the dead weight of the oscillator; (3) have the moisture content of the soil equal to or slightly higher than the optimum for maximum density as determined in the laboratory; (4) provide sufficient dead weight to give a unit dead weight bearing pressure of the oscillator on the soil of about 10 to 12 psi.
