Viscoelastic Properties of Paving Asphalts

Source

This paper reviews the basic flow properties of asphalts and presents experimental data on the effect of shear rate on viscosity of paving asphalts at various temperatures. The oversimplified flow or rheological patterns of asphalts presented here are intended primarily to create an awareness of the basic parameters and engineering yardsticks which, when applied, will lead to a better understanding of asphalt pavement behaviors and eventually lead to their implementation in the engineering design of pavements.

A basic understanding of the language of rheology, a knowledge of the basic theory of the rheology of asphalt, and a familiarity with the necessary instrumentation are required before these concepts can be effectively implemented as performance standards.
