This paper describes the development, construction, and operation of guarded hot plate apparatus that makes use of newly designed cold plates, designated as envelope type. Two forms of envelope are described, and results obtained using this equipment are presented graphically.
The thermal conductivity of corkboard was measured at a mean temperature of −86 F using an 8-in. ASTM Method C 1772 thermal conductivity apparatus surrounded by an envelope cold plate. The procedure described is a simple one which could be carried out in any laboratory having reliable guarded hot plate apparatus.
The use of the envelope type cold plates simplifies the construction and operation of guarded hot plate apparatus, and the data obtained have better than anticipated accuracy.
The development and construction of a 24 by 24-in. guarded hot plate apparatus using a metal envelope is discussed. This equipment is designed for operation with cold face temperatures from −150 to 150 F. Data obtained during preliminary operation of this equipment are presented.
