The purposes of this paper are to review the needs for nondestructive testing in the nuclear field, to present the history of developments which have taken place, and to indicate the present status of the development programs. The term nondestructive testing, as applied here, is used in reference to the applications of eddy currents, ultrasonics, various types of radiations, and other phenomena to check components of nuclear plants. Most applications to date have involved pressure vessels of all sizes and types, all types of piping, including instrument leads and heat exchanger tubing, uranium metal as cast and rolled, and the cladding or protective coating of fuel elements.
