Wear of High-Speed Railway Wheels

Source

An introduction of the presently running wheels on the New Tokaido Line and the results of fundamental researches carried out beforehand in order to determine their configuration and material treatment are presented herein. A general description of a high-speed wear-testing machine is stated in the beginning, followed by the results of fundamental researches performed using this machine to find out the effect of the running speed and the contact pressure on the wear of wheel tread and flange. Examinations of real wheels in service revealed that the wear of wheels was not different from the conventional trains. The maintenance procedures of wheels on the New Tokaido Line is also described.
