Extending Service Life of Wood Piles in Sea Water

Source

Tens of thousands of wood piles are now in use, supporting marine structures. Many have been attacked by marine borers. This paper discusses the protection of wood piles in place by means of barrier coatings. The economics of the problem indicate that an expenditure for a barrier coating equal to the cost of the pile is warranted if the barrier will reasonably prolong the pile life. Results of field tests of barrier coatings are presented.
