The Southern Pacific Co. in cooperation with the Standard Oil Co. of California initiated a program in August, 1957, to study the factors that influence wear in diesel locomotives. Because a large number of variables were involved in the study, the irradiated ring test technique was chosen.4 It is the purpose of this paper to describe the test procedure used on locomotives, to discuss the radiation hazards involved, and to present a statistical study of test precision.
