Progress Report on Dislocation Behavior in Lithium Fluoride Crystals During Cyclic Loading

Source

It has been shown by many investigators (for example, 1,2) that in cyclic, as in monotonic, loading, plastic deformation is not homogeneous. Most of it takes place in well-defined glide bands. The amount of strain that takes place within these glide bands is often large compared to the strain per band after monotonic loading. Furthermore, since plastic flow is due to the motion of discrete flow units—dislocations—the strain within a glide band is inhomogeneous. Thus macroscopic measurements of displacements or strains are incapable of revealing the microscopic processes that occur during cyclic loading.
