The paper evaluates some of the methods for incorporating results from fatigue tests on asphalt materials into a pavement design process. Some of the proposed design procedures are summarized and the significant strengths and weaknesses are discussed. Although this presentation is not an exhaustive treatise on the subject, an attempt is made to evaluate most of the design procedures in the literature. The design approaches discussed range from a conceptual approach suggested by Moavenzadeh  to the applied techniques suggested by Kasianchuk, Monismith, and Garrison . The equivalent wheel load concept, in which the equivalency is based on a fatigue mode of distress, as presented by Deacon  and Witczak  for aircraft loadings, are also summarized and discussed. The limiting deflection and the “fail-safe” approaches, are discussed for historical reasons. For this discussion fatigue failure is taken to mean failure in a structural sense as opposed to a functional failure.
