This method covers determination of the strength of saturated cylindrical rock specimens tested under triaxial loading with controlled pore pressure. In this undrained test the pore pressure system is sealed to prevent flow in or out and the change in pore pressure induced by loading is measured. The test provides data useful in determining the shear strength at various lateral pressures, cohesion intercept, angle of shearing resistance, and deformation modulus. Since the amount of pore pressure in the test specimen is known and accounted for, the strength values determined are in terms of effective rather than total stress. Correlation of induced pore pressure with other changes such as stress and axial, diametric, and volumetric strains can be made.
